What is the Washoe County Public Administrator?

The Public Administrator is a democratically elected officer who oversees the estates of residents who have passed away without someone who can represent their assets (money and property) and wishes. In these cases the Public Administrator is appointed to represent the estate and safeguard the assets.

Washoe County has over 500,000 residents. With such a large population, the Public Administrator oversees hundreds of Estate cases every year.

There are several misconceptions about the office of the Public Administrator and why it is necessary. The State of Nevada and the County do not try to take the estate assets for themselves. Instead the County attempts to do the opposite, they investigate and attempt to find children and next of kin who should rightfully have a claim to those assets according to our state laws.

The Public Administrator is primarily governed by NRS 253 (Nevada Revised Statutes 253).

What is an Estate and an Estate Plan?

These documents can come in many forms but the most common is a Last Will and Testament. Having a will is essential for an estate plan.
